Hyderabad: The Telangana Transport Department is preparing to launch a dedicated command and control centre at the office of the Transport Commissioner in Khairatabad, aimed at real-time monitoring of public transport vehicles across the state.
Officials said the proposed setup would function on the lines of the Hyderabad Police Command Control Centre and will use GPS-based Vehicle Location Tracking (VLT) systems to oversee the movement of buses, vans, cabs, and other passenger vehicles registered with the department.
The initiative is part of a broader plan to improve passenger safety, with a specific focus on protecting women commuters. The command centre will allow transport authorities to track vehicles live, respond quickly to emergencies, and act promptly if a passenger’s safety is at risk.
All categories of public transport vehicles—including RTC buses, private buses, maxi cabs, school vans, and mini buses—will be brought under this surveillance mechanism. Officials say the centre will help ensure greater accountability and enable rapid action in distress situations.
As part of the implementation, the department is moving toward making GPS tracking devices mandatory at the manufacturing stage itself. A senior official confirmed that while some categories of vehicles are already fitted with VLT devices, discussions are underway to equip older vehicles with similar systems.
The department is also working with higher officials and the Transport Minister to finalise guidelines and feasibility plans to ensure comprehensive coverage across the public transport network.
Authorities say once operational, the RTA command control centre will significantly enhance the department’s ability to enforce compliance and safeguard commuters statewide.
