HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court on Thursday heard a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the enforcement of the Right to Education (RTE) Act in private schools across the state.
The petition was filed by social activist Tandava Yogesh, who argued that although the RTE Act was enacted 16 years ago, its provisions had not been fully implemented to benefit students in Telangana. He pointed out that many other states across the country had already enforced the Act.
The petitioner specifically requested the implementation of the clause mandating that 25 percent of seats in private schools be reserved free of cost for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
It was brought to the court’s attention that the Telangana government had submitted a report to the High Court in October last year, stating its intention to implement the RTE Act from the 2025–26 academic year.
The Chief Justice’s bench directed the state government to submit an affidavit detailing the progress made so far regarding the Act’s implementation. The next hearing has been scheduled for the 21st of this month.
