Hyderabad: The death toll in Monday’s explosion at a chemical manufacturing unit in Pashamylaram industrial area of Sangareddy district has climbed to 21. Over 22 others sustained injuries, of whom 11 remain in critical condition. Officials fear more bodies may be recovered, as several workers are believed to be trapped under the debris.
The blast occurred when a reactor exploded inside the Sigachi Industries plant, destroying the production block. Preliminary reports said 108 workers were on site when the explosion took place. Eyewitnesses said some workers were flung nearly 100 metres due to the force of the blast.
Five workers died instantly. Sixteen more succumbed to injuries during treatment in nearby hospitals. Eleven are currently in intensive care. Families of workers gathered at the factory soon after news of the explosion spread, leading to chaotic and distressing scenes outside the plant.
Among the deceased was Sigachi plant vice president L.N. Gowan. He was entering the premises in his car at the time of the blast. The vehicle was torn apart in the explosion.
