Hyderabad: A crane toppled during Durga idol immersion at Saroor Nagar lake on Saturday, causing panic but no casualties. The machine fell into the water, avoiding a major disaster. Officials said lives would have been lost if it had fallen on the road.
Locals blamed the mishap on the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s decision to give the contract to an inexperienced firm.
Saroor Nagar crane accident during Durga idol immersion sparks anger
Residents said GHMC gave the work to City Crane Services because it quoted 43 percent less than others. They alleged the company lacked experience and did not maintain its cranes well. People said poor upkeep caused the crash.
They recalled a similar crane accident by the same firm at Tank Bund during last year’s Ganesh immersion. Despite that record, GHMC again gave the firm contracts at several spots. Citizens criticised the civic body and demanded safer choices for such work.
