Hyderabad: Secunderabad railway police and Eagle teams arrested four ganja couriers who tried to move contraband in trolleys through AC compartments. The operation led to the seizure of 91 kilograms of ganja worth ₹22 lakh.
Eagle Director Sandeep Shandilya identified the accused as Prakash Chandra Pradhan, Basant, Ghanshyam and Chitrasena, all from Odisha. He said they worked as couriers for a smuggler named Prashant. Each received 10 to 15 kilograms of ganja from him and hid the packets in new trolley bags and handbags. They then boarded trains with AC tickets. For every trip, they earned ₹10,000.
Couriers made 20 ganja deliveries in trains over the past year
The gang delivered the consignments in Pune to two receivers, Sairam and Mami. Investigations showed the couriers had smuggled ganja 20 times in one year using the same method. Their repeated AC travel and constant use of new trolleys raised suspicion. Police kept watch and caught them during the latest trip.
Shandilya said railway police had arrested 147 smugglers since last year and seized 2,327 kilograms of ganja. They also registered 116 cases. He added that new leads had surfaced about the main supplier and receivers, and special teams were tracking them.
