Hyderabad: The Secunderabad Railway Station, one of the busiest terminals in the country, is undergoing a ₹700-crore modernisation project. With the Dasara and Diwali rush approaching, railway officials have begun diverting extra trains to nearby stations to ease pressure on the main hub.
Several services now run from Charlapalli, Kacheguda, Nampally, Malkajgiri, and Umdanagar stations. Authorities are also considering operating festival special trains from these points instead of Secunderabad.
Passenger rush during the festive season
On normal days, the station handles nearly 1.3 lakh passengers. The number often crosses 2 lakh during major festivals. A study found that 80–90% of unreserved passengers use Platform 1 for both entry and exit, creating severe congestion.
In comparison, the area near Platform 10 remains less crowded. This zone has better links with RTC buses, metro services, and nearby hotels.
Diversions and passenger arrangements
To cut congestion, officials plan to reroute some trains via Sanathnagar, Ammuguda, Moulali, and Charlapalli. They will also introduce additional halts at satellite stations.
The railways have created temporary waiting areas inside the terminal. They also set up a dedicated entry and exit point from Platform 1 to the Secunderabad (West) Metro.
Passengers using private cars and taxis should shift to Platform 10 for pickup and drop-off. At Platform 1, the facility will remain limited during peak hours.
