Hyderabad: Senior Congress leader and Advisor to the Telangana Government Mohammed Ali Shabbir on Monday expressed deep grief over the demise of philanthropist and entrepreneur Ghiasuddin Babu Khan, who passed away in Hyderabad.
Shabbir Ali hailed Babu Khan as a “philanthropist par excellence,” recalling his pioneering role in supporting education and social empowerment for the underprivileged.
Strong supporter of Muslim reservation and student welfare
The Congress leader recalled that Ghiasuddin Babu Khan was among the earliest supporters of the 4% Muslim reservation introduced by the Congress government. “At a time when there was resistance to socially and economically backward Muslims getting reservation, Babu Khan and his organisations extended strong support. He personally toured districts to enrol poor students in scholarship and fee reimbursement schemes between 2004 and 2009, helping thousands,” Shabbir Ali said.
Through the Hyderabad Zakat and Charitable Trust (HZCT) and the Foundation for Economic and Educational Development (FEED), Babu Khan institutionalised philanthropy. Under his leadership, FEED awarded more than two lakh scholarships and set up schools to empower poor and marginalised students.
Entrepreneur who shaped Hyderabad’s real estate
Along with his social work, Ghiasuddin Babu Khan made a mark as a real estate entrepreneur. He co-founded Mogul Builders and Planners in 1973, and later set up Babukhan Properties, which went on to deliver housing projects across Hyderabad. His ventures ranged from affordable homes to townhouses and farmhouses, helping widen access to both residential and commercial property for a broad section of people.
Lasting legacy of service and vision
Shabbir Ali said Ghiasuddin Babu Khan’s dual legacy—as a builder of both homes and educational institutions—would inspire future generations. “His service to humanity and his entrepreneurial vision will be remembered for generations to come,” he added, extending condolences to the bereaved family.
