Hyderabad: Irrigation water was released into the Singur canal system on Thursday after a two-season gap, with Health Minister Damodara Raja Narasimha opening the left bank canal from Singur reservoir in Sangareddy district.
The release of 100 cusecs marks a restart for the ayacut spanning 40,000 acres, which faced back-to-back crop holidays due to canal lining work taken up by the irrigation department.
The Singur project currently holds 18.464 TMCft of water against its full capacity of 29.91 TMCft.
The government-imposed crop breaks were in effect while infrastructure upgrades were underway, halting seasonal irrigation supply.
With the release, farmers in the command area are now expected to resume paddy transplantation. Many expressed satisfaction over the development, calling it a timely intervention to revive agricultural activity in the district.
