Experts from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) have confirmed that the SLBC tunnel collapse site in Telangana is stable, allowing rescue teams to safely proceed with debris removal operations.
HYDERABAD: After a comprehensive assessment of the ongoing rescue operations at the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel collapse site in Telangana, experts from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) have declared that the tunnel roof and surrounding soil are stable. They assured that there is no further risk of collapse, making debris removal operations significantly safer.
The announcement followed a detailed evaluation conducted by BRO specialists, who analyzed the structural conditions at the site. Their findings have enabled the rescue teams to proceed with increased confidence. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also conducted an independent assessment of the site, while other teams worked to access the most critical sections of the collapsed tunnel.
Following extensive safety drills, BRO has granted clearance to extend operations beyond the 33.75-kilometre mark. The decision to proceed was made only after ensuring the safety of all personnel involved in the rescue mission. With BRO’s approval, personnel from the Army, Navy, and contractor organizations have now intensified efforts to clear the debris.
The debris removal operation, a highly complex and challenging task, commenced on the previous evening and is expected to continue for the next 48 hours. Experts are currently assessing the nature and volume of the debris. Preliminary estimates indicate that over two lakh cubic meters of debris must be cleared to locate the missing workers and engineers trapped inside the tunnel.
Removing such a vast quantity of debris poses a significant challenge, but rescue teams remain focused on accelerating the process while maintaining safety standards.
