After six days, the SLBC tunnel rescue operation has intensified. Authorities are using advanced machinery to cut through debris and remove mud as efforts continue on a war footing.
NAGARKURNOOL: The rescue operation at the SLBC tunnel has finally gained momentum after six days. Authorities have deployed advanced machinery, including TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) cutters, to remove debris and clear the accumulated mud. The rescue teams are working relentlessly to advance the operation.
The government’s response to the SLBC tunnel incident in Domalapenta, Nagarkurnool district, had become a subject of controversy. However, after former minister Harish Rao visited the site, the administration expedited rescue efforts. The government has now granted decision-making authority to the rescue teams, enabling faster operations.
On the sixth day, rescue teams used railway department’s heavy plasma cutters to dismantle the TBM equipment stuck inside the tunnel. The accumulated mud is being extracted using loco trains, while scattered debris is being cleared. Officials started by removing mud at the 12-kilometer mark and are using high-capacity pumps to drain water from the tunnel.
The South Central Railway’s high-powered plasma cutting machines are being used to slice through the TBM machinery and transport it out of the tunnel. Rescue teams are working tirelessly in shifts, day and night, using large pumps to remove water. The extracted mud is being transported in large containers via train. Officials estimate that around 10,000 cubic meters of mud needs to be cleared.
Continuous Rescue Operations
A coordinated effort is underway with teams from the Army, Navy, NDRF, SDRF, Border Roads Organization, Rat Miners, South Central Railway, Robinson Mining, and private firms like MEGA and Navayuga working together. District Collector Santosh stated that it might take two more days to complete the mud removal process.
Mining Experts Assisting in Operations
The Indian Borders Organization is assisting in rescue efforts. With the use of advanced technology, the clearing process has accelerated. The state government has provided full operational freedom to the rescue teams, which is aiding the smooth execution of tasks. Officials are confident that the location of the trapped workers will be identified within the next two to three days.
