DELHI: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has strongly criticised the manner in which the Waqf Amendment Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha, alleging that it was “bulldozed” through amid a charged and controversial atmosphere.
Speaking out against the bill, Gandhi described the process as a grave assault on the Constitution. She said that despite a 12-hour-long debate in the Lower House, the opposition was given limited opportunity to present its views. According to her, the Congress party has maintained a clear and unequivocal position against the bill.
Sonia Gandhi expressed concern that the legislation poses a threat to both national interests and democratic values. With the bill now before the Rajya Sabha, she urged her party members to act strategically and called upon all opposition parties to unite and defeat the legislation in the Upper House.
She accused the Modi government of reducing the Constitution to a mere formality, stating that its primary objective appeared to be the systematic dismantling of constitutional principles. Sonia Gandhi also alleged that the government was intent on turning India into a surveillance state and encouraged leaders to expose what she described as a dangerous agenda.
