Hyderabad: A food safety lapse involving spoiled dairy products caused the Gurukul school food poisoning incident at Uyyalawada Mahatma Jyotiba Phule BC Girls Gurukul in Nagarkurnool, according to medical officials.
The incident occurred on Saturday night. Health staff said curd prepared using expired milk packets supplied by the school’s cooking agency led to illness among students. Kitchen staff reportedly failed to notice the expired packaging.
The contaminated curd caused stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
Out of 820 girls enrolled at the school, 111 students fell ill by Sunday morning. School staff immediately shifted them to Nagarkurnool General Hospital, where they received treatment.
All affected students were discharged by Sunday evening and returned to the hostel.
Parents demand accountability from school authorities
Parents rushed to the hospital after learning about the incident. Several questioned why they weren’t informed on Saturday night itself.
Some confronted school principal Lalitha, demanding answers about delayed communication and negligence.
Food safety officers visited the school and collected food samples for testing.
This incident follows the ministerial visit and political fallout over alleged negligence and infrastructure problems at Gurukul schools statewide.
