Hyderabad: The National Dam Safety Authority has turned its focus to the Srisailam Project, jointly managed by Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, highlighting the urgent need for repairs ahead of the upcoming flood season.
The authority has identified several structural issues that require immediate attention, particularly around the spillway. Officials emphasised the need to stabilise the hills flanking both sides of the spillway to prevent landslides and erosion during high water flow.
One of the key concerns raised was the lack of proper road access to the dam apron, which is critical for inspection and maintenance. The authority has recommended construction of an access road as a priority.
The Telangana government had earlier expressed its concerns about the safety of the dam, formally writing to the Dam Safety Authority to intervene. Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Engineer from the Water Resources Department later followed up with a separate letter, assuring that the state would implement any repairs recommended after inspection.
Responding to the requests, the Authority’s Chairman and his team held a meeting with officials in Amaravati, followed by an on-site inspection of the Srisailam Project to assess its condition and finalise the list of urgent repair works.
Both states are expected to act promptly on the Authority’s recommendations to ensure the dam’s integrity and regional safety during the monsoon season.
