Hyderabad, January 29: A B.Tech first-year student named Keerthi attempted suicide at Malla Reddy Women’s Engineering College. She tried to jump from the fourth floor of the college building but was saved in time by fellow students and the watchman.
Preliminary information suggests that Keerthi was afraid of failing her exams, which led to her suicide attempt. Further details about the incident are awaited.
In the past year, several students from Malla Reddy institutions have died by suicide. In December, Shravani, a first-year B.Tech student at Malla Reddy Engineering College in Dundigal, died by suicide in her hostel room.
In July, Harinath, a third-year student at Malla Reddy Agricultural University, attempted suicide by consuming poison and jumping from a private hostel building in Maisammaguda.
In February, MD Mohammad, an ECE final-year student at Malla Reddy Engineering College, died by suicide due to disappointment over not securing a placement during campus selections.
These incidents have raised concerns among parents and student unions, who are urging the government to address the recurring suicides in private and corporate educational institutions.
