DELHI: The Supreme Court is set to hear a series of significant petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf Amendment Act today. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar will begin hearing arguments from 2 p.m. onwards.
While 10 petitions have been listed for hearing before the CJI-led bench, over 70 petitions have been filed in total against the Waqf Amendment Act by individuals, religious institutions, MPs, political parties, and various state governments.
Seven states — Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, and Assam — have defended the Waqf Board (Amendment) Act, 2025, and filed affidavits in the Supreme Court asserting that the law’s constitutional validity must be upheld.
The amendment bill was passed by Parliament on April 4 and received Presidential assent on April 5. It was officially notified for implementation starting April 8. Since then, the Act has faced ongoing opposition from several quarters.
