HYDERABAD: A state-wide discussion is underway regarding the appointment of a new Director General of Police (DGP), the highest-ranking position in the police department, in Telangana. The current DGP, Dr Jitender, is scheduled to retire on 6 September this year. In preparation, the government has already begun its selection process for his successor.
Today, a list of senior IPS officers has been prepared and sent to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Based on eligibility, track record, and service record, the UPSC will shortlist three senior IPS officers and send the final list back to the state government. The new DGP will be appointed based on this list.
Preliminary information indicates that seven senior IPS officers are vying for the DGP post. The list sent to the UPSC includes Ravi Gupta from the 1990 batch, CV Anand from the 1991 batch, Apte Vinayak Prabhakar from the 1994 batch, Kothakota Srinivas Reddy, B. Shivadhar Reddy, Dr Soumya Mishra, and Shikha Goel.
It may be recalled that Ravi Gupta, from the 1990 batch, was previously appointed as DGP during the initial period of the Congress government in the state. Subsequently, Dr Jitender took over the responsibilities as DGP.
Ravi Gupta has since been assigned the role of Special Chief Secretary in the Home Ministry. Regarding retirements, Kothakota Srinivas Reddy is due to retire on 5 August this year, Ravi Gupta on 19 December, CV Anand in June 2028, Apte Vinayak Prabhakar in October 2029, B. Shivadhar Reddy on 28 April 2026, Dr Soumya Mishra on 30 December 2027, and Shikha Goel in March 2029.
With these developments, there is growing suspense over whom the government will appoint as the new DGP for Telangana.
