Hyderabad: Swift action by Hyderabad Cyber Crime police saved a Moghalpura tailor from losing ₹1.18 lakh in a Hyderabad APK fraud case. Fraudsters had installed a malicious app that captured his banking details and used saved card information to place online orders.
On 11 September, the 48-year-old victim unknowingly downloaded an app named “RTO Challan.” Soon after, the fraudsters attempted purchases worth ₹95,239. The man rushed to the Cyber Crime Police Station, where PC N. Srikanth Naik acted quickly through the NCRP portal. He removed the malicious app, cancelled fraudulent e-commerce orders, and secured a refund.
Hyderabad APK fraud case also targeted a techie
In another case, a 35-year-old techie from Ashok Nagar faced a similar attack. Fraudsters tried to siphon ₹23,532, but police intervention prevented the loss.
Police explained that gangs spread malicious APKs through WhatsApp, SMS, and social media. Once installed, the apps capture OTPs, banking credentials, and saved card details, which criminals then exploit to make unauthorized transactions.
Authorities advised the public not to download apps from unknown links. They urged citizens to use only official stores like Google Play or Apple App Store. Police also warned against sharing OTPs or banking details and suggested avoiding storage of card data on e-commerce platforms.
