Tahsildar surveyor, aide caught in ₹2 lakh bribe trap in Secunderabad

Hyderabad: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday apprehended a Mandal Surveyor and his assistant Chainman in Secunderabad. They were allegedly accepting a ₹2 lakh bribe to delay demarcation of a disputed land parcel.

According to ACB DSP Sridhar, GHMC had directed Mandal Surveyor Kalva Kiran to verify whether a plot near Minister Road in Secunderabad was designated as park land. This land was under lease to a hotel operator, who is the complainant in the case.

Kiran approached the complainant and stated that GHMC required a demarcation survey. When informed that the site was under ongoing litigation in the High Court, Kiran offered to report the court case to GHMC. Thus, avoiding the survey. He demanded ₹3 lakh for the favour. The amount was later negotiated down to ₹2 lakh.

On Tuesday evening, when the complainant informed Kiran that he had the money, the surveyor asked him to wait in the car. He said he would send someone to collect it. Kiran, who had already left for Nizamabad, was being trailed by an ACB team.

Chainman Mekala Bhaskar then arrived to collect the bribe and was caught with the cash in his pocket. During interrogation, Bhaskar admitted that he was acting on Kiran’s instructions. Simultaneously, another ACB team apprehended Kiran at the Boinpally bus stop.

Both were arrested and are being questioned. A separate ACB team conducted searches at Kiran’s residence in Nizamabad. Notably, both accused were wearing Ayyappa malas during the bribery attempt.
