Hyderabad: The Telangana government will hold an all-party meeting with the state’s Members of Parliament at 4 p.m. today to discuss the Banakacharla project proposed by Andhra Pradesh. The meeting will take place at the Secretariat and will include MPs from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
Invitations have been extended to Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar, along with MPs from BJP, BRS, and AIMIM. Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy formalised the invitations through written communication.
According to the Minister, Andhra Pradesh has submitted proposals related to the Banakacharla project to the Central Water Resources Department. Preliminary reviews suggest the proposal may violate provisions of the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal Award (1980) and the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act (2014). The Telangana government has raised concerns over possible infringement on the state’s water rights.
Uttam Kumar Reddy noted that he had written to the Union government in January seeking clarification. In response, the Ministry of Jal Shakti stated that it had not yet received a Detailed Project Report (DPR) from the Andhra Pradesh government.
The Chief Minister, A. Revanth Reddy, has reportedly raised the matter with Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil on multiple occasions. Today’s meeting is aimed at building consensus among parties to oppose the project collectively.
The Minister reiterated that Telangana must act decisively to safeguard its water entitlements, and called for cross-party unity to address the issue.
