Hyderabad: In a major relief for grassroots childcare workers, the Telangana government has approved a significant hike in retirement benefits for Anganwadi teachers and helpers, fulfilling a key electoral promise.
Going forward, Anganwadi teachers retiring from service will receive a one-time payout of ₹2 lakh, while helpers will be entitled to ₹1 lakh. The decision, cleared by the state Finance department following a proposal from the Women and Child Welfare Department, marks a 100% increase from the existing amounts.
Currently, teachers receive ₹1 lakh and helpers ₹50,000 upon retirement. The new payouts will apply to staff retiring at the age of 65. Telangana has over 37,500 Anganwadi centres, each staffed by one teacher and one helper, collectively employing nearly 70,000 workers. On average, around 7,000 Anganwadi employees retire each year.
Sources said the file had been pending clearance due to procedural delays, but Minister for Women and Child Welfare Seethakka’s recent intervention with Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who also oversees the Finance portfolio, helped expedite approval.
A formal Government Order is expected to be issued shortly, paving the way for immediate implementation. The move is set to benefit thousands of families dependent on Anganwadi staff salaries.
Minister Seethakka was greeted with warmth during her official visit to Bhadradri Kothagudem district on Thursday, where Anganwadi workers thanked her personally for championing their cause. Many credited her persistent efforts for the long-awaited revision in retirement support.
