Telangana government appoints Shivadhar Reddy as new DGP

Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Friday appointed senior IPS officer Shivadhar Reddy as the new Director General of Police (DGP), marking a major reshuffle in the state police department. Reddy, a 1994-batch officer, will formally assume charge as the state’s top cop on October 1.

Born in Hyderabad and originally from Thulekalan (Peddatundla) village in Ibrahimpatnam mandal of Ranga Reddy district, Reddy pursued his education entirely in the city, completing his LLB from Osmania University before entering civil services. He briefly practiced law before joining the Indian Police Service in 1994.

Shivadhar Reddy new DGP brings extensive field experience

Reddy served as ASP in several key subdivisions including Anakapalli, Narsipatnam, and Chintapalli in Visakhapatnam. He also commanded the elite Greyhounds anti-Maoist squad and later held SP posts in Bellampalli, Adilabad, Nalgonda, Srikakulam, Nellore, and Guntur districts.

As Intelligence Chief between 2014 and 2016, he played a pivotal role in anti-Maoist operations and led the planning of the controversial 2016 encounter that killed gangster Nayeem. During his tenure as Hyderabad South Zone DCP following the 2007 Mecca Masjid blasts and police firing incident, he managed law and order during an intensely volatile period.

Reddy also served in the United Nations Mission in Kosovo as part of India’s peacekeeping forces. His international and national service earned him multiple honours including the President’s Police Medal, Police Medal for Gallantry, and a United Nations Medal.

He held the post of Visakhapatnam Commissioner of Police and served as Additional Director and Director of ACB in undivided Andhra Pradesh. In 2023, after the Congress party came to power in Telangana, he was reappointed as the state’s Intelligence Chief.
