Hyderabad: The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) on Saturday issued an urgent public alert. It banned the use of Coldrif Syrup after reports linked the medicine to the deaths of several children.
Contaminated batch details released
Initial tests confirmed the presence of diethylene glycol (DEG), a toxic substance, in the syrup. Authorities traced the banned product to Srisun Pharma in Sunguvarchatram, Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu.
DCA Director General Shahnawaz Qasim announced that the warning applies to batch number SR-13. The batch, manufactured in May 2025, will expire in April 2027. It contains paracetamol, phenylephrine HCl, and chlorpheniramine maleate.
Officials said bottles from this batch pose serious health risks. Therefore, the DCA urged consumers to stop using the syrup immediately. In addition, it asked the public to report any possession of the batch to local drug control officers.
Statewide action to seize stocks
To prevent further risks, the DCA directed all drug inspectors and assistant directors across Telangana to seize stocks from medical shops, distributors, and hospitals. The move followed reports of child fatalities in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan after the syrup was consumed.
Moreover, the department appealed for public cooperation and vigilance. Citizens can file complaints through the DCA’s toll-free number: 1800-599-6969.
