Telangana BJP marks Liberation Day, demands official recognition

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP observed Telangana Liberation Day on Wednesday at the party office under the leadership of Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy. State BJP president Ram Chander Rao hoisted the national flag.

Speaking on the occasion, Rao urged the Congress government to officially recognise and observe Liberation Day. He alleged that the ruling party avoided the event for vote-bank politics. He added that the BJP, once in power, would mark the day officially across the state.

Rao recalled that Hyderabad State merged with the Indian Union on September 17, 1948, ending the Nizam’s rule. India gained independence on August 15, 1947, but Hyderabad remained under Nizam Osman Ali Khan for another 13 months.

He said the Indian Army launched Operation Polo on September 13, 1948, under the leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The army entered Hyderabad, and within four days, the Nizam surrendered. An official declaration on September 17 confirmed the state’s merger with India.

Rao noted that many Telangana people sacrificed their lives in the struggle. He recalled the contributions of leaders like Ravi Narayan Reddy, Mallu Swarajyam, Chandrarajeswara Rao, and Shoaibullah Khan.
