Hyderabad: The Telangana Cabinet will decide on holding local body elections at its meeting on Saturday, August 30. The session will also finalise the Assembly agenda, with the House scheduled to convene the same day.
The State Election Commission issued a notification to publish electoral rolls for all Gram Panchayats. This step indicates that elections could take place in September. A key issue before the Cabinet is the government’s plan to provide 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs).
Cabinet to weigh BC quota amid legal hurdles
Two bills enabling the quota have awaited Presidential assent for over three months. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy consulted legal experts in New Delhi earlier this week. He sought advice on whether the quota could be enforced through a Government Order instead of an act, and on possible legal challenges from the opposition.
The Chief Minister is also awaiting the opinion of Congress MP and senior lawyer Abhishek Singhvi before moving forward. Officials said implementing the quota without a formal law demands careful legal groundwork to withstand court scrutiny.
The Cabinet may also discuss the P.C. Ghose Commission report on the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project during the five-day Assembly session. Revanth Reddy has already warned of action against those responsible for alleged irregularities in the project, signalling a heated debate in the House.
