Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Tuesday directed officials to draft a comprehensive policy for cow protection in Telangana. A three-member committee has been constituted to study existing practices and prepare recommendations.
The committee will include Sabyasachi Ghosh, Special Chief Secretary to the Animal Husbandry Department; Shailaja Ramaiyar, Principal Secretary to the Endowments Department; and Raghunandan Rao, Secretary to the Agriculture Department. They have been tasked with conducting field visits and reviewing policies from other states.
Chairing a review meeting at his residence, Revanth Reddy expressed concern over reports of cows dying in overcrowded goshalas, especially those donated by devotees. He said new measures must reflect both cultural sentiment and practical needs.
The government will construct modern cow shelters in four locations during the first phase: Vemulawada, Yadagirigutta, Yenkepally near Hyderabad, and at the Animal Husbandry University. The CM instructed officials to allocate over 100 acres for the shelter at Vemulawada, given the high volume of cattle donated during the ‘Kode Mokku’ ritual at the temple.
Revanth Reddy said the government is willing to allocate significant funding for the initiative and directed officials to give special attention to calf welfare. An initial approach paper on cow shelter management was presented during the meeting.
Those present included Animal Husbandry Minister Vakiti Srihari, CM’s Principal Secretaries V. Seshadri and Srinivasa Raju, Special Chief Secretary Sabyasachi Ghosh, Principal Secretary Shailaja Ramaiyar, Agriculture Secretary Raghunandan Rao, HMDA Commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmed, Animal Husbandry Director Gopi, and Ranga Reddy Collector Narayana Reddy.
