Hyderabad: Telangana recorded a sharp rise in crime, while road accident deaths stayed high, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 71st annual report. Hyderabad topped the list of major Indian cities in forgery and cheating cases.
The NCRB said Hyderabad registered 4,090 forgery and cheating cases, with 4,203 victims included in FIRs. Across Telangana, 1,83,644 criminal cases were recorded between 2021 and 2023.
Rise in crimes against women
The state registered 23,679 crimes against women in 2023, a six percent increase from 22,065 cases in 2022. The report noted more cases of abetment to suicide. Over three years, the state saw nearly 25,000 additional criminal cases, driven by violent crimes, cybercrime and economic offences.
Cybercrime rose sharply with nearly 8,000 more cases. Economic offences also rose, with more than 6,000 cases added. Atrocity cases declined slightly overall, but crimes against Scheduled ethnic group increased.
Road accidents and fatalities
The state reported 7,760 road accident deaths in 2023, with 88.7 percent linked to overspeeding. Records show that more than 35 deaths occurred per one lakh population. Telangana reported a 1.33 percent increase in road accident deaths compared to 7,559 deaths in 2022. Out of 4,50,026 road accidents nationwide, nearly five percent took place in Telangana.
