Hyderabad: The Union Government extended the tenure of Telangana Chief Secretary (CS) Ramakrishna Rao by seven months, allowing him to serve until March 2026. With this decision, CS Ramakrishna Rao will continue as the state’s top bureaucrat during a crucial phase.
The Centre issued formal orders on Friday after approving the Telangana government’s request for an extension. Rao was originally set to retire on August 31, 2025. The state sought additional time to ensure administrative stability and smooth implementation of reforms and welfare programmes.
Experienced administrator
The state appointed CS Ramakrishna Rao in May 2025 after recommending his name to the Centre. He is regarded as one of the most experienced IAS officers in the Telangana cadre. Rao earlier served in finance, revenue, and administrative reforms. His appointment as Chief Secretary aimed to bring efficiency and strengthen governance.
Focus on flood management and reforms
Officials said CS Ramakrishna Rao’s extension would help the state manage flood relief and reconstruction work. He will also oversee welfare schemes, guide civil supplies, and coordinate with district administrations. The government expects him to play a decisive role in policy roll-outs that require close monitoring from the Chief Secretary’s office.
Centre accepts state request
The Union Government endorsed the state’s view that CS Ramakrishna Rao’s leadership is vital for stability. His continuation will prevent disruption in administration at a time when Telangana is dealing with heavy rains, infrastructure damage, and urgent welfare measures.
Legacy of service
CS Ramakrishna Rao has earned a reputation for combining policy-making with effective field-level administration. His extension reflects the confidence of both the state and the Centre in his leadership. Officials believe his presence will reassure staff and provide clear direction across departments.
