Hyderabad: As digital adoption accelerates, cyber fraud is becoming alarmingly rampant across Telangana, prompting law enforcement authorities to issue repeated warnings to the public. Exploiting people’s vulnerabilities, fraudsters are luring victims through fake links, attractive offers, and fraudulent job schemes—often wiping out entire bank accounts in a single click.
In a recent advisory issued via social media, the Telangana Police cautioned citizens against falling for enticing online advertisements. “Be wary of eye-catching offers on social media. Think before clicking links offering discounts and schemes. These are designed to exploit your weaknesses,” the warning stated.
Police have also raised red flags over part-time job scams, which promise easy income for minimal effort—often targeting students and unemployed youth. Fraudsters circulate ads claiming individuals can earn from home using just a mobile phone. “These are scams. No one will offer high profits for little investment,” the police stressed, especially warning against jobs promoted on social media platforms.
One such case recently unfolded in Hanamkonda district, where a B.Tech student from Uppalapally village in Kamalapur mandal was duped of a staggering ₹7.83 lakh. The victim received a WhatsApp message on April 16 from an unknown number, claiming that investments in cryptocurrency would yield double returns. Initially, he sent ₹1,000 through PhonePe. Encouraged by apparent gains, he went on to transfer a total of ₹7,83,500 to the account numbers shared by the scammers. When the promised returns never materialised, the student realised he had been conned and filed a complaint with the cyber crime police.
Telangana Police continue to urge the public not to trust online schemes that guarantee quick wealth, and to report suspicious activities immediately. They emphasise that awareness is the strongest defence against cyber fraud in today’s digital age.
