Hyderabad: Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) Jitender on Thursday said police and disaster response teams were on high alert across the state as heavy rains continued to disrupt normal life. He disclosed that nearly 2,000 people had been rescued so far from flood-hit areas with the help of the Air Force, Army, SDRF, and NDRF.
Speaking to ABN-Andhrajyothy, the DGP said two helicopters had been pressed into service for rescue operations, and more deployments would be made if required. “We have mobilised around 2,000 personnel under the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). These teams are operating with the same efficiency as the NDRF in saving lives,” Jitender said.
SDRF and police monitoring round-the-clock
He noted that SDRF units, set up last year, were delivering strong results in ongoing relief measures. All district Superintendents of Police had been instructed to remain in the field and coordinate with local administrations. The State Command Control Centre in Hyderabad was closely monitoring the situation and issuing directions to ensure timely response.
“Even as Vinayaka Chavithi festivities are underway, the police department is prioritising flood relief to ensure no loss of life,” the DGP stressed.
Roads, railway track damaged
Jitender said parts of Kamareddy and Siddipet districts were among the worst affected, with several major roads damaged by floodwaters. One railway track had also been completely washed away, disrupting transport links. “We are coordinating with railways and irrigation authorities to restore connectivity and prevent further risks,” he said.
The DGP assured Hyderabad residents that despite overnight rainfall, the city was not facing major disruption. However, disaster teams and police personnel were on standby to tackle any urban flooding. “We are prepared for every situation,” he added.
