Telangana hosts first drug enforcement meet to unify regional crackdown

Hyderabad: In a significant move to strengthen the collective fight against narcotics, the Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) on Thursday convened the first-ever Convergence Meeting of Drug Law Enforcement Agencies at Banjara Hills’ TGiCCC.

With drug trafficking growing increasingly complex especially in border and transit regions the event marked a crucial step toward coordinated inter-state operations. From shifting smuggling routes and synthetic drug surges to the digitalisation of the illicit trade, the meeting highlighted the urgent need for collaboration across enforcement units in India’s southern and western states.

The gathering brought together senior officials and agencies from Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and key Central bodies. Their shared goal: to break interstate drug syndicates through intelligence sharing, joint investigations, and coordinated legal action.

Delegates discussed the current patterns of drug movement, the role of technology in both enforcement and evasion, and the importance of financial tracking to cut the money trail. Discussions also focused on building a structured intelligence network and formalising mechanisms for swift operational alignment between states.

Highlighting the dual strategy of tackling both supply and demand, Abhishek Mohanty, IPS, DIG TGANB, and Ch. Rupesh, IPS, SP TGANB, outlined Telangana’s approach to drug interdiction. Both officials stressed the importance of arresting key players in the supply chain while also investing in awareness programmes to reduce demand, especially among youth.

The meeting ended with a strong consensus: regional convergence is no longer optional it’s essential. The initiative laid the groundwork for long-term collaboration, unified enforcement, and a shared resolve to safeguard communities from the growing drug threat.
