Telangana braces for early monsoon, CM Revanth orders proactive crop procurement

Hyderabad: As monsoon rains sweep into Telangana two weeks ahead of schedule, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has issued urgent directives to all district collectors, urging them to respond with swift planning and ground-level preparedness.

The early arrival of the rains has already caused snags in paddy procurement across several districts. Addressing concerns, the Chief Minister assured farmers that the state is fully prepared to buy every last grain, regardless of the disruption.

“This year, we’ve witnessed an unprecedented scale of procurement during the Yasangi season,” Revanth said during a video conference with officials. While the state purchased 42 lakh metric tonnes of paddy last year, it has already procured 64.5 lakh metric tonnes this time—an all-time high, with 90% of the process completed.

He also highlighted the government’s commitment to prompt payments. “Within 48 hours of purchase, farmers have been paid. We’ve disbursed ₹12,184 crore this season,” he noted, crediting the efficiency of collectors and officials for the success.

Telangana recorded the highest paddy yield in the country this year—2.75 crore tonnes—a feat Revanth attributed to the dedication of its farmers and the coordination between the agriculture and civil supplies departments.

Yet, scattered disruptions persist. In 12 out of 33 districts, isolated protests have been reported, which the CM suggested could be politically motivated. He referenced incidents where misinformation linked farmer deaths to procurement delays. “Collectors must stay transparent, release real-time data, and counter rumours with facts,” he instructed.

Officials were also told to oversee logistics, including transportation and warehousing, ensuring no bottlenecks. Any exploitation of farmers by middlemen or millers, he warned, would invite strict legal action.

The emergency video meeting, held from Hyderabad’s Command and Control Centre, brought together ministers and top bureaucrats, including Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and ministers Uttam Kumar Reddy and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy. The discussions revolved around four critical areas: crop procurement, Indiramma housing, the Bhubharati land records scheme, and Kharif preparedness.

With monsoon rains already showing a 29% increase over last year, the CM declared the season favourable but warned against seasonal diseases. He instructed the health department and collectors in the agency and forest zones to stay alert.

To support Kharif sowing, officials were told to ensure ample seed and fertiliser supply, monitor buffer stock, and curb black marketing. Sellers of counterfeit seeds, he said, should face criminal charges—and if needed, be booked under the PD Act.

On the land reforms front, Revanth contrasted the unpopular Dharani system with the new Bhubharati initiative, which he said had already shown success in select mandals. The government plans to roll it out statewide, accompanied by awareness drives and revenue sabhas starting June 3.

The Indiramma housing project also received special focus. Calling it a flagship welfare scheme, the CM instructed collectors to finalise beneficiary lists by month-end, ensure the timely delivery of free sand, and explore affordable construction techniques. Model homes must be showcased to beneficiaries, he added.

Finally, collectors were asked to form price monitoring committees at the mandal level to rein in construction costs, and district in-charge ministers were told to oversee preparations for procurement, revenue meetings, and Kharif planning during their visits on May 29 and 30. A comprehensive report is expected by June 1, ahead of the June 2 Telangana Formation Day celebrations.
