Hyderabad: The Telangana Election Commission (EC) officially suspended the local body elections following the High Court’s directions. The commission issued a gazette notification on Thursday evening confirming the decision.
Telangana Election Commission suspends local body elections after court order
The EC cancelled the election schedule announced on September 29 and declared that the notification would remain suspended until further orders. It clarified that the move followed the High Court’s recent interim orders.
The decision came after two days of detailed hearings in the Telangana High Court on BC reservations in local bodies. Advocate General Sudarshan Reddy represented the state government during the proceedings.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the division bench issued interim directions, staying the reservation process in the elections. The court allowed petitioners two weeks to file objections to the government’s counter affidavits and adjourned the case for six weeks.
Meanwhile, the High Court also stayed the local body election notification itself. As a result, the election process will remain on hold for the next six weeks.
