HYDERABAD: The Telangana State Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu notice of a series of fatal electrocution incidents reported across the state, raising grave concerns over public safety and government accountability.
The Commission’s intervention follows a spate of incidents in recent days where lives were lost due to electric shocks in various districts. In a strongly worded directive, the Commission has sought reports from the Chief Secretary of Telangana, the Secretary of the Energy Department, the Managing Director of the Electricity Department, and other relevant officials. Authorities have been instructed to submit full details by 4 May 2025.
The move comes amid growing reports that inadequate power infrastructure, unsafe wiring, and official negligence have led to these preventable deaths. Victims include labourers, rural residents, and ordinary citizens, many of whom succumbed due to a lack of basic safety protocols.
Calling the deaths a severe violation of human rights, the Commission emphasised that the state bears full responsibility for ensuring public safety. It warned that unless immediate corrective measures are taken to improve electrical systems, more lives could be at risk.
The Commission has issued clear instructions to all concerned departments to prioritise safety measures and present a comprehensive action plan to prevent further incidents.
Public outrage over the increasing number of such fatalities has also intensified, with citizens demanding swift government intervention. The case is expected to be heard by the Commission in the coming weeks.
