Hyderabad: A debt-ridden farmer from Karimnagar district, Telangana, ended his life after failing to repay loans taken for his daughters’ marriage, highlighting ongoing agrarian distress in the region.
The deceased, identified as Samayya from Rachapalli village, had three daughters. He borrowed nearly ₹6 lakh for the wedding of his eldest daughter, Shruthi, five years ago. With only three acres of barren land, he earned a living through seasonal farming and manual labour, but could not repay the loan.
Faced with the pressure of marrying off his other two daughters, Pallavi and Akshaya, and mounting financial burdens, Samayya consumed pesticide on June 29. He was rushed to a hospital in Warangal, where he died during treatment.
After the postmortem, his body was brought back to the village. With no son in the family, his eldest daughter Shruthi performed his final rites, including lighting the funeral pyre an uncommon sight in traditional rural customs.
The emotional farewell, with all three daughters in tears beside their father’s body, moved the village and reignited calls for better support for farmers grappling with private debt.
