Hyderabad: A high-level delegation from Telangana on Thursday urged the Union Government to declare the recent floods in the state as a national disaster and sought ₹16,732 crore in financial assistance to address the damage.
Led by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, the delegation included Agriculture Minister Thummala Nageswar Rao and Special Representative A.P. Jithender Reddy. They met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and submitted a detailed memorandum highlighting the widespread impact of the August floods across several districts.
The ministers reported that between August 25 and 28, unprecedented rainfall caused severe flooding in Kamareddy, Medak, Nirmal, and Nizamabad. Eight districts recorded excess rainfall between 65% and 95%, while the overall seasonal rainfall stood at 25% above normal.
State mobilizes response, but losses continue to mount
Officials said the state had deployed seven NDRF teams, fifteen SDRF units, and around 100 Army personnel for rescue and relief operations. Despite rapid response, 22 lives were lost, and significant damage occurred to infrastructure, crops, livestock, and private property.
In the last 72 hours alone, rains severely damaged roads, railway tracks, electric poles, transformers, culverts, and public buildings, disrupting transport and utilities. The delegation requested that a Central inter-ministerial team be sent to inspect the damage on the ground.
Preliminary flood damage pegged at ₹5,018 crore
The state has estimated total preliminary losses at ₹5,018.72 crore. Major heads of damage include:
- Roads (R&B): ₹785.59 crore
- Irrigation: ₹655.70 crore
- Municipal Administration: ₹1025.00 crore
- Crop Loss: ₹236.00 crore
- Power Sector: ₹40.73 crore
- Rural Development: ₹377.43 crore
- Emergency Repairs: ₹1500.00 crore
Other departments, including Housing, Health, Animal Husbandry, and Women and Child Welfare, reported additional damage.
The delegation also reminded the Centre that a previous request for ₹11,713 crore made last year after floods in Khammam remained unaddressed. They urged the release of both amounts, totalling ₹16,732 crore, to support relief and rehabilitation.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reportedly responded positively and assured that a Central team would soon visit Telangana to assess the damage.
Senior officials including Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar, Finance Principal Secretary Sandeep Kumar Sultania, Agriculture Secretary Raghunandan Rao, and Coordination Secretary Dr. Gaurav Uppal also participated in the meeting.
