Hyderabad: Heavy rains triggered widespread flooding across Telangana, causing damage worth several hundred crores across key government departments. Panchayat Raj, Roads and Buildings (R&B), Agriculture, Power, Irrigation, and Women and Child Welfare were the worst-hit, officials said. With rainfall subsiding, authorities have begun damage assessments and are submitting preliminary reports to the government.
Crop losses across 270 mandals
Initial surveys found severe crop damage in 2,463 villages across 270 mandals. Agriculture officials estimated that 2,20,443 acres were affected, impacting 1,43,304 farmers. Paddy bore the highest loss at 1,09,626 acres. Cotton suffered on 60,000 acres, maize on 16,000 acres, soybean on 21,000 acres, and horticulture on 639 acres. Pulses were damaged on 7,000 acres, including 6,000 acres buried under silt. At the earlier compensation rate of ₹10,000 per acre, the losses translate to nearly ₹220 crore.
Department-wise losses
The R&B department reported losses worth ₹560 crore, while Panchayat Raj infrastructure suffered damage of ₹374 crore. Agriculture losses stood at ₹220 crore. Floodwaters entered houses, damaged belongings, and disrupted anganwadi centres and other public offices. Roads developed breaches in several districts, halting transport. Power infrastructure also took a heavy hit with electric poles uprooted, transformers washed away, and 33 kV lines damaged. While officials restored supply in most areas, some villages remain without electricity.
Reports for cabinet meeting
Officials will submit reports during the state cabinet meeting on Saturday. The government plans to seek central assistance once a consolidated report is ready. Severely affected districts include Kamareddy, Medak, Nizamabad, Nirmal, Adilabad, Mulugu, Mancherial, Asifabad, and Rajanna-Sircilla.
Road restoration needs
The R&B department estimated that permanent restoration works would require ₹560 crore, with another ₹53 crore needed for temporary repairs. Surveys identified damage along 873 km of roads at 784 locations, with breaches in 39 places. Major requirements include Adilabad (₹30 crore), Nizamabad (₹17 crore), Kamareddy (₹16 crore), Karimnagar (₹12 crore), Khammam (₹38 crore), Bhadradri-Kothagudem (₹60 crore), Sangareddy (₹51 crore), Medak (₹41 crore), Narayanpet (₹22 crore), Gadwal (₹30 crore), Wanaparthy (₹26 crore), and Nagarkurnool (₹33 crore).
