Hyderabad: The Telangana Congress government on Wednesday observed Praja Palana Dinotsavam across the state, marking September 17, 1948, when Hyderabad merged with the Indian Union.
At the central ceremony in Public Gardens, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy unfurled the National Flag, received a guard of honour, and paid floral tributes at Gun Park. Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, Director General of Police Jitender, and other senior officials also attended.
The Chief Minister described September 17 as a landmark in Telangana’s democratic journey. He recalled the sacrifices made during the armed struggle against the Nizam. According to him, people buried autocracy and embraced self-rule in 1948. Today, he said, Telangana continues to enjoy the democratic fruits of that struggle.
Women’s role and empowerment focus
While highlighting women’s contribution to the Telangana armed struggle, Reddy said their efforts remained unforgettable. “We stand firmly behind women’s progress. Our aim is to empower one crore families into prosperity,” he stated. Furthermore, he pledged to build Telangana as a model of freedom and equality.
Education and sports priorities
The Chief Minister underlined that education alone paves the way for the future. Therefore, the state is investing heavily in world-class opportunities. He urged the Centre to exempt the Young India School project cost from FRBM limits. At the same time, he said the government was prioritising sports development to strengthen opportunities for youth.
Farmers, reservations and water rights
On farmer welfare, Reddy announced that the government purchases every grain produced and deposits payments into accounts within 48 hours. Meanwhile, he said the Assembly had passed a bill granting 42 percent reservations to Backward Classes, and pressure was now on the Centre to approve it. Moreover, he stressed that Telangana would never compromise on its rightful share of Krishna and Godavari waters.
Hyderabad development and Musi project
Turning to Hyderabad, the Chief Minister pledged to transform the city into the “Gateway of the World.” He further declared that rejuvenation of the Musi River would begin in December, with plans to make it a global tourist hub. In addition, he revealed the government was preparing to develop a “Future City” on 30,000 acres. However, he alleged that some groups were creating hurdles, and he urged citizens to resist such attempts.
