Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Kumar Goud said the state government has filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court to implement Backward Class (BC) reservations in full.
He said the 40-page petition seeks to enforce Government Order (GO) 9, which mandates 42% reservations for BCs in local body elections. According to Goud, the order aims to strengthen the political representation of Other Backward Classes and improve their social conditions.
The Congress leader accused the BJP and BRS of opposing the initiative, though both parties had earlier supported the BC reservation Bill in the Assembly.
Telangana moves Supreme Court to challenge HC stay on BC quota
Goud criticised the Telangana High Court’s interim order that allowed elections under the earlier BC quota. He said the state government filed the petition to get the stay vacated.
Speaking to reporters outside the court, Goud said he met senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, who is representing Telangana in the case. The Supreme Court is likely to hear the matter on Thursday.
