Telangana government announces ₹5 lakh ex gratia for Kurnool bus fire victims

Hyderabad: The Telangana government announced an ex gratia of ₹5 lakh each to the families of those who died in the Kurnool bus fire tragedy near Chinnatekur on the outskirts of Kurnool. The government also declared ₹2 lakh compensation for the injured passengers. Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the state would ensure quality medical treatment for those receiving care at hospitals.

Officials said the death toll in the horrific accident has reached 20 so far, while rescue teams continue to recover bodies from the gutted bus. The retrieval process is progressing on a war footing, they said. Out of all passengers, 23 people managed to escape safely from the burning vehicle.

Minister Ponnam Prabhakar added that the government was closely monitoring the situation. He assured that necessary steps were being taken to assist the victims’ families and the injured. Authorities fear the number of casualties may rise as search and recovery continue through the night.
