Hyderabad: As heavy rain looms over Telangana for the next couple of days, state health officials are warning of a likely surge in seasonal illnesses.
The Department of Public Health and Family Welfare, in an advisory issued Thursday, pointed to rising humidity and falling temperatures as prime conditions for the spread of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. Infections caused by contaminated water—such as typhoid, jaundice, and gastroenteritis—are also expected to climb.
Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak, the Director of Public Health, urged residents to take simple but effective precautions. He advised the use of mosquito nets and repellents, and emphasized the importance of keeping bedding safe. “Every Friday should be treated as a ‘Dry Day.’ Clear any stagnant water in and around your home to cut off mosquito breeding,” he said. Cleaning drains and proper waste disposal, he added, are equally important to stop the spread.
To handle any surge in illnesses, the government has readied public hospitals with extra beds, IV fluids, and key medications. Officials also encouraged the public to follow weather updates closely and stick to health advisories while the rains persist.
