Hyderabad: Telangana heavy rains continued to lash multiple districts on Monday, triggering severe flooding and widespread disruption. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alerts for several regions, while authorities in Hyderabad and other cities intensified relief and rescue operations.
Incessant rainfall inundated roads, disrupted traffic, and forced hundreds of residents in low-lying areas to evacuate. The state government announced school holidays in affected districts as water entered homes and damaged infrastructure.
Telangana heavy rains trigger red alert in three districts
The IMD placed Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahabubabad, and Mulugu under red alert, warning of extremely heavy rain. An orange alert was issued for Jayashankar Bhupalpally, while 13 other districts—including Adilabad, Kamareddy, Hanumakonda, and Warangal—remained under yellow alert. According to IMD’s official portal, thunderstorms and squalls with winds up to 40 kmph are likely across central and northern Telangana.
In Hyderabad, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) teams deployed pumps to drain water from inundated streets. Disaster Response Force personnel monitored vulnerable locations like Musheerabad, Chaderghat, and Tolichowki. Officials urged residents to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel.
Residents in areas like LB Nagar, Malakpet, and Kukatpally reported knee-deep water and power outages. Several arterial roads, including the Khairatabad-Punjagutta stretch, experienced severe waterlogging. The Hyderabad traffic police diverted vehicles in multiple zones to prevent accidents.
Meanwhile, TSWRDC confirmed temporary closures in flood-hit junior colleges, and emergency shelters were opened in affected urban zones. The Telangana State Development Planning Society’s real-time rainfall dashboard showed over 120 mm of rainfall in parts of Warangal and Sircilla.
The continuing Telangana heavy rains have intensified concerns over dam inflows and reservoir safety. Officials are keeping a close watch on the Musi, Godavari, and Krishna catchments.
