Hyderabad: Telangana High Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition that opposed 42 percent reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections. Justice K. Lakshman, who heard the case, strongly criticised the petitioner.
High Court questions basis of BC reservations plea
The judge asked on what basis the petitioner had filed the plea. He noted that the state government had not issued any order on BC reservations. Moreover, Justice Lakshman said filing petitions on media reports could not be allowed.
He further explained that petitions based only on newspaper stories carried no legal weight. Therefore, the court warned that such actions wasted judicial time. As a result, the dismissal ended the legal challenge to BC reservations in local polls.
Government gains relief ahead of elections
The state government has been working to finalise the quota for BCs before holding the local elections. In fact, officials have already been conducting the final round of discussions on the process. Consequently, sources expected the notification to come soon.
Political and official circles had closely watched the High Court’s stance. Many believed an adverse ruling could delay the elections. However, the dismissal cleared the way for the government to move forward. Therefore, the order brought relief and allowed progress on the polls.
