Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to submit a detailed report on flood control measures taken under the National Disaster Management Act and on the safety of the Kaleshwaram project. The bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G.M. Mohiuddin ordered the submission of a status report by August 28, adjourning further hearing to that date.
The directions came during a public interest litigation filed in 2020 by Dr. C.H. Sudhakar and K. Shravan Kumar seeking court orders for the effective implementation of the Disaster Management Act. The petition cited nearly 60 deaths caused by floods in the state in recent years.
Court seeks compliance report on earlier flood safety orders
Petitioners’ counsel Chikkudu Prabhakar told the court that the High Court had earlier issued orders under Section 39 of the Disaster Management Act on September 4, 2023, but the state had yet to fully implement them. He also said that the National Dam Safety Authority had submitted a report on the Kaleshwaram project’s safety, but no follow-up action was disclosed.
After hearing submissions, the bench ordered the government to file a compliance report on its earlier directives, along with specific details of measures taken to protect the Kaleshwaram project from potential flood damage.
