Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court reserved its verdict on petitions challenging the state government’s decision to extend the liquor shop application deadline. Justice N. Tukaramji heard both sides on Friday and announced that the judgment would follow soon.
Telangana High Court liquor shop deadline dispute
The Excise Department extended the application deadline to October 23 after disruptions caused by the BC Bandh and bank strike. The original last date had ended on Thursday. However, several liquor traders challenged the move, saying it violated the rules.
Justice Tukaramji asked the government to explain the legal grounds for extending the deadline. He said the administration could not take such decisions arbitrarily. The judge warned that all applications submitted after the original deadline might become invalid if the extension lacked legal sanction.
Traders and government defend their positions
Traders argued that the Excise Department exceeded its powers, while the government’s counsel maintained that the extension ensured fairness for applicants affected by the strike. After listening to both sides, the court reserved its decision.
Officials said the government is closely watching the outcome, which will affect the state’s liquor shop allotments. Many traders who applied after the deadline now fear cancellation if the court rules against the extension.
Court seeks explanation on disability reservation
In a separate case, the High Court asked the government to explain why no reservation was provided for person with a disability in liquor shop allotments. The bench directed the state to submit a detailed response at the next hearing.
