Hyderabad: Telangana Minister Seethakka assured that the state government would stand firmly with journalists and their families. She spoke at the Telangana Media Academy auditorium in Nampally on Monday while distributing welfare fund cheques to journalists.
The minister said journalists highlight social issues and place them before the government. Reporters also act as a bridge, connecting the public with the state. She recalled the Telangana movement, noting how journalists from rural correspondents to senior editors voiced people’s aspirations. Their service, she said, remains a model for society.
Seethakka added that financial assistance from the Media Academy gave relief to the families of deceased journalists. Training programmes, she pointed out, are helping field reporters sharpen professional skills. She announced she would request the Chief Minister to allot houses to homeless journalists and extend health cards to families of deceased reporters.
Telangana journalists’ welfare aid strengthens support for families
Special Commissioner for Information and Public Relations C.H. Priyanka explained that the academy had launched regular training sessions on AI, social media and language skills. She noted that a computer lab and a library were also being set up for journalists. In addition, she said the academy would train field-level PR officials under ministerial guidance.
Media Academy Chairman K. Srinivas Reddy stated that the academy granted ₹1 lakh each to families of 18 deceased journalists, along with pensions for five years. He added that six reporters suffering from illness or accidents received ₹1 lakh each, while one journalist received ₹50,000. The total amount distributed reached ₹24.5 lakh.
Telangana journalists’ welfare programmes expand training opportunities
Reddy said workshops on AI, social media, Urdu and tribal journalism had already benefited working reporters. Training would soon begin in the Mulugu district as well, he announced. He expressed concern that many journalists face health issues and premature deaths due to work pressure. According to him, the academy uses only interest from welfare funds to finance these initiatives.
Secretary Nagulapalli Venkateshwara Rao, journalist leaders and several others also participated in the programme.
