Hyderabad: With the notification for Telangana local body polls issued, all major political parties have begun the hunt for financially strong and locally influential candidates. The reservation process has reshuffled seats, leaving several aspiring leaders disappointed.
Leaders who had prepared grassroots cadres for Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) and sarpanch positions now face setbacks as their expected seats fell under reserved categories. Many are weighing whether to field proxy candidates, though doubts remain about loyalty after a win.
Telangana local body polls see hectic candidate search
In several mandals, the post of Mandal Parishad President (MPP) has been reserved for communities under the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category. Party leaders are carefully scrutinising potential candidates who can work effectively while carrying the party’s banner.
Congress, BRS, BJP, TDP, CPI, CPM and even independents are preparing to file nominations in full strength. In some panchayats, general wards have attracted strong interest, as winning there may open the door for the position of deputy sarpanch.
With the poll atmosphere heating up, candidates are already working on alliances, seat adjustments, and behind-the-scenes negotiations. Villagers note that panchayat results often depend less on party affiliation and more on the personal credibility of candidates.
Concerns over women sarpanch seats
Voters have also raised concerns about women sarpanch positions. In past elections, winning women candidates were sidelined by their husbands, who exercised real power. Citizens say the Panchayat Raj Act should be enforced strictly to ensure only the elected sarpanch occupies the office seat.
Parties face pressure on ticket allocation
Many activists worry that parties may prioritise wealthy entrants over long-serving workers. “If the party recognises those who worked hard for years, we will feel our struggles were worthwhile. But if tickets are sold to moneyed outsiders, it will bring frustration,” a local leader said.
Citizens, meanwhile, say they want candidates committed to solving local issues, regardless of party. With the reservation process altering many expectations, this round of local body polls is being seen as more unpredictable than in the past.
