Hyderabad: With the Indian Meteorological Department forecasting above-normal rainfall this season, Telangana’s Minister for Revenue and Housing Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy has instructed officials to gear up for potential floods, particularly in the Godavari and Krishna river basins.
Chairing a high-level review meeting on Thursday at the Secretariat, the Minister met with Collectors from flood-prone districts to map out an early response strategy. He stressed the need for preemptive action over reactive measures in disaster management.
“We’ve formed a standing committee at the state level, similar to the one in Hyderabad, comprising heads of Fire Services, Disaster Management, Irrigation, Roads & Buildings, Health, and the Command and Control Centre,” Ponguleti said. “The committee will advise on necessary interventions and report back within a week.”
The Minister noted that the monsoon arrived 15 days earlier than expected and urged Collectors to remain on high alert. He called for inter-departmental coordination and the use of modern tools to enhance readiness.
District administrations have been asked to supply user IDs for early warning systems to the state’s Integrated Command and Control Centre in Hyderabad. They must also prepare flood action plans by June 30, reflecting the unique vulnerabilities of their regions.
Ponguleti called on the Revenue Disaster Management department to ditch outdated practices and fully embrace tech-driven responses.
The meeting saw participation from Principal Secretary Naveen Mittal (Revenue), Disaster Management Commissioner Harish, Fire DG Nagi Reddy, HYDRA Commissioner Ranganath, Panchayati Raj Commissioner Srujan, CP DCL Director Mushraf Ali, Agricultural Cooperation Director B. Gopi, IMD official Nagaratnam, and Collectors from six districts including Adilabad and Mulugu.
