Hyderabad: Telangana is set to introduce a new sports policy focused on improving the performance of state athletes at the Olympic level, officials said on Sunday.
The announcement came during Olympic Day celebrations at LB Stadium in Hyderabad, where IT department special principal secretary Jayesh Ranjan stated that the government is taking serious steps to support athletes. The policy is expected to be approved in the upcoming cabinet meeting.
Students from 14 regions took part in the event through an “Olympic Run”. Addressing the gathering, Ranjan said the state is aiming to bring its athletes to the global level, in line with nations that excel at the Olympics.
Telangana Sports Authority chairman Shiva Sena Reddy said the new policy will ensure better facilities and consistent encouragement for athletes. He added that medal-winning athletes will be offered government jobs and highlighted that past administrations failed to provide adequate support to sportspersons.
The event was also attended by state minister Vakati Srihari and Olympic medallist Deepthi Jeevanji, who encouraged students to actively participate in sports.
