HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has announced the launch of new ration cards embedded with QR codes, set to be distributed from Ugadi, the Telugu New Year. These upgraded cards aim to improve efficiency and transparency in the public distribution system.
The new ration cards will have a light blue color and resemble ATM cards in size and design. Each card will include a QR code, which, when scanned, will display details of the cardholder and family members. The front side of the card will list the names and addresses of family members, while the back side will provide the beneficiary’s address, ration shop details, dealer’s contact number, and shop timings.
Initially, the government explored issuing chip-enabled ration cards, but the estimated Rs 600 per card cost led to the decision to use QR codes as a more cost-effective alternative. These new QR-based ration cards will be distributed free of charge to beneficiaries.
The rollout will begin with newly selected families, followed by a phased distribution to all eligible beneficiaries. Officials emphasize that QR codes will enhance tracking, minimize fraud, and ensure that essential commodities reach intended recipients efficiently.
Beneficiaries are advised to stay informed through official channels for updates on the distribution schedule and process.
