Hyderabad: Roads & Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy put the entire R&B department on high alert on Thursday after heavy rains damaged roads across Telangana. He ordered quick temporary fixes and told officials to stay on the ground until things return to normal.
During a teleconference, Komatireddy spoke with senior engineers about road damage in Medak, Sangareddy, Kamareddy, Rajanna-Sircilla, and Nirmal. He asked for detailed reports on washed-out culverts, damaged bridges, and blocked roads. NH-44 near Kamareddy and Nirmal was one of the worst-hit spots.
Emergency repairs underway as Telangana plans ₹1,157 crore road rebuild
The minister asked teams to put up warning signs at dangerous spots and work with local police to create detours. “Public transport must not stop,” he said, urging teams to act fast and work around the clock.
Officials said the rains damaged 1,039 km of roads across 37 divisions. In 31 areas, roads were completely cut off, though 10 have been fixed temporarily. Of 356 flooded culverts and causeways, 289 now have alternate routes. Workers restored traffic on 236 out of 305 blocked stretches. Another 206 small bridges also suffered structural damage.
Temporary repairs will cost ₹53.76 crore. Full reconstruction will need ₹1,157.46 crore.
24×7 monitoring and real-time updates
At the R&B Control Centre, the State Roads Chief Engineer assigned four officers per shift to monitor the situation in all 37 divisions. Special Chief Secretary Vikas Raj said officials are sending updates twice a day to the minister.
Komatireddy praised the emergency work but warned officials not to let their guard down. “The next few days are critical. Engineers must stay in the field and give real-time updates,” he said. He also told teams to work closely with departments like police, irrigation, and panchayat raj to prevent accidents.
He asked for a long-term road rebuilding plan and told engineers in flood-hit districts to stay alert and respond quickly to any new damage.
